The story

Growing up reading Harry Potter and watching Doctor Who, I always admired "fan art" — fan-generated artworks for popular works of fiction. I especially valued high-quality art that depicted characters and settings in ways that brought them to life beyond the page or screen.

I created Museum of Fan Art to shine a new light on this art genre. Here, fan art can be discovered and admired just like traditional paintings in a museum art gallery, which creates a different experience and perspective of exploring fan art.

The museum originally featured two galleries for Doctor Who and Harry Potter. Later, by my friends' requests, I also added additional galleries featuring Sherlock and One Punch Man.

Building the gallery

I began by curating a selection of art for each gallery by scouring social media and art platforms, and contacting artists for posting permission.

Next, I used HTML, PHP, and CSS to code the museum galleries, with JavaScript and jQuery for animations. I also added door sound effects and horizontal scrolling to simulate the experience of exploring art galleries in a real-life museum.
